Review of assessment results

At UNSW you can have results reviewed in two ways: an academic re-assessment of a piece of work or a clerical re-check of your marks in a course.

Re-assessment

If you believe your mark in an assessment task is not a fair reflection of your performance in the task, you can apply for re-assessment. You must lodge your application to Student Central within 15 days of receiving the result, or in the case of an exam, within 15 days of the exam results being released.

Unless you have received a “fail” grade, there is a $50 fee for a re-assessment application. The Review of Results application form is available at
https://my.unsw.edu.au/student/academiclife/assessment/ReviewofResults.pdf.

You should first discuss your mark with your teacher first. You may find this discussion explains your results and assists your preparation for the next assessment task. If after these discussions you still do not feel that your result is justified or if there has been no change to the mark, you can apply for a review of the result. You need to justify your request with reasons, and applications will be declined if insufficient reasons are given for the request.

Required documents:

When you lodge your application form, you must also attach the following documents:
  • Hard copy of the course outline provided to you by your Course Authority
  • Hard copy of your academic statement, available from MyUNSW
  • Receipt of payment of application fee made at the University Cashier (if applicable)
  • If you are not paying the fee, a copy of the assessment task clearly indicating the “Fail” result
Once you lodge your form, the Head of School will discuss the matter with the lecturer concerned, and if they believe there are sufficient grounds to warrant a re-mark, a fresh copy of the assessment task will be given to a different staff member for assessment. If your application is declined, you will be notified through your university email.

If your mark is raised by the review, the $50 application fee will be refunded to you provided you do not owe the University any other money (for example, library fines).

Note: Lodging an application for a remark can result in the mark being raised or lowered. With any application there will be a re-check of the addition of your marks for the course, which could also result in your overall mark going up or down.

Administrative re-checks:

You can also lodge an application for an administrative re-check of marks. This costs $10 and involves a re-count of all components of your assessment to ensure they have been correctly recorded. If your total mark is increased as a result of this process, you will receive a refund.
