Walama Muru: a return of road or path; reconnecting Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians. It is with this in mind that Walama Muru came to represent an opportunity for UNSW students to travel to a regional Aboriginal community in order to learn and share in the local Aboriginal culture.
This program is run in partnership with the UNSW Nura Gili Indigenous Resource Centre. In 2008, volunteers will undertake community development projects, utilising the funds they raise throughout the first semester of 2008, for their travel arrangements, accommodation, and required materials while in the community.
During the pilot program in January 2008 volunteers undertook a variety of community projects in the central NSW town of Wellington, which included repairing and installing the Aboriginal Mission’s basketball court, seating area, children’s play area and fields, as well as painting and repairing a shop front for use by the Aboriginal Medical Service outreach program.
