In late 2011, the Federal Government passed legislation to allow universities to charge a Student Services and Amenities Fee (SSAF) of up to $263 to fund non-academic programs and initiatives on campus.
From Semester 1 2012, the University of New South Wales will charge Commonwealth Supported Place students a fee of $263 for full-time students and $131.50 for part-time students (see https://my.unsw.edu.au/student/fees/SSAF.html for details). Eligible UNSW students can apply through myUNSW for SA-HELP.
The money that students will be charged is paid directly to UNSW to distribute as it sees fit, as long as it is within the Government guidelines (see Support for Student Servcie for details). Some of the services that SSAF will fund include sport and recreation, accommodation, childcare, legal and advocacy services, counseling and psychological services and clubs and societies on campus. Approximately half of the SSAF fee will be given to Arc, which is slightly above the level of funding that UNSW has provided us for the past five years. This funding is being given to Arc due to the increased demand that we will experience on our student services as our membership base expands rapidly.
Arc has decided to launch a new membership model for 2012 to ease the burden that the SSAF fee will have on students. Students will be able to opt-in as Arc members for free and get MORE out of uni life, including the following benefits:
*The subsidised service fee (on legal representation and room hire) is exclusive to Members and is only $29 a year.
You can join Arc either at O-Week membership stalls or online here.
Over the coming months, Arc will be conducting student consultations including surveys, submissions and focus groups in order to make recommendations to UNSW on how it should spend the proceeds from SSAF. You can have your say in this process - just contact me for more details at chair@arc.unsw.edu.au
