Rhea: Seeking growth and that rewarding feeling

RHEA KOHLI 2018 COORDINATOR

SHACK TUTORING

Even during a late afternoon catch-up, Rhea Kohli brings along her very affectious positive energy.

Rhea is a current 3rd year UNSW Business School student (Marketing/Management) and a Marketing Intern at eBay. She is also in the last few weeks of her 2018 Coordinator role for the very wholesome volunteering program, called Shack Tutoring.

Rhea is a strong believer of a multi-facet student life. When she started her degree, she wanted to grow her network, challenge herself and practice skills that would be useful in her life after university, but at first struggled to find an avenue to achieve this.

When she saw a Sponsorship Leader role advertised for the Arc volunteering program Phil’ in 2017, she quickly jumped on the opportunity. In this role, she made new friends who had a similar mindset; and by gaining new sponsorships and leading a team, she could also add some great experience to her resume.

Further, in 2018 she looked for a new challenge and successfully applied for Shack Tutoring Coordinator at Arc. This proved to be a completely new experience, with organising two tutoring sessions each week for 120 high schoolers from Years 6-12 and connecting them with 80 UNSW student volunteers.

While Shack Tutoring’s partner, Shack Youth Services in Maroubra, provided a network of younger students from socioeconomically disadvantaged families, Rhea went through 200 applications from current UNSW students who wanted to volunteer for these kids.

Rhea selected 80 volunteers and provided them with the training needed to become a tutor; then matched them with the relevant tutee based on school subject and level.

During the semester, she would make sure the tutoring sessions ran smoothly, provided publicity through social media channels and posters at campus, organised social events to drive culture and was a contact person for any occurring issues.

She says it has been a unique role with a lot of opportunity for growth.

“I’ve loved the fact that I am only a university student with not much experience but been given the autonomy to oversee the recruitment, management and lead of a huge team”.

Not to mention, it has been rewarding.

“The UNSW student volunteers are grateful for the resources they’ve had through their upbringing, and it has been great seeing them give a helping hand to someone who needs it. These sessions also provide an avenue for a younger generation to be inspired to go to university in the future. The result is a lot of joy and strong friendships between age groups and social classes”.
