MOOSE BLOOD | BLUSH

BY Alessandra Femenias

Moose Blood’s sophomore album, Blush, is a collection feel-good rock anthems and emotional love songs.

Hailing from the UK, the band describes their music as ‘emo’, yet with the ever changing landscape that is rock music, this album is a unique fusion of rock, pop, punk, and everything in between.

Released through Los Angeles-based Hopeless Records, Blush is the type of album that instantly puts you in a good mood. With tracks like Honey, Knuckles, and Glow, it is hard not to appreciate the band’s knack for writing honest and raw love songs that don’t sound tacky or forced.

Like most ‘emo’ bands before them, the album also deals with heart break, growing up and the all of the difficulties in between. Tracks like Shimmer and Spring show the band’s versatility, reminiscent of Brand New’s Me Vs. Maradona Vs. Elvis. The album’s closing track Freckle, is definitely a standout, with a sing along bridge, surely expected to be a crowd favourite.

The middle of the album lacks a little depth, as at times the songs seem to run into each other. However, the album definitely picks up with Sway and the rest of the tracks that follow.

Overall, Blush is an album that evokes feelings of love, loss and heart break, all whilst maintaining an upbeat sound, with catchy choruses and soaring guitars. Despite dealing with heavier themes at times, Moose Blood manage to maintain a hopeful and positive outlook on life.

Catch Moose Blood supporting Luca Brasi on the 19th of August at Sydney’s Oxford Art Factory.
