ACTS YOU DON'T WANT TO MISS AT THIS THAT 2019

BY Jerry Kam

Looking for your next festival hit?

This That 2019 will be held at Wickham Park in Newcastle on the 9th of November. This year the festival provides a good mix of heavy rockers and banging bass on its “This Stage” and “That Stage”. Newcastle might be a bit far away for some of us at UNSW, but here’s a list of artists you really don’t want to miss out on.

Ali Barter

Known for her lively and energetic performance, Ali Barter has been acknowledged as a star on the rise by many critics. With heavy-hitting songs like “Cigarette” and “Girlie Bits”, there’s gonna be a wild set waiting for you. With her new album coming out in October, you can be one of the first to check it out live with thousands of people. Oh, and she will be touring around the world straight after This That, so be sure to squeeze through the crowd if you don’t want to miss her.

Alex The Astronaut

Described as one of Australia's most powerful and important songwriters, Alex has been telling her little stories through folk-pop songs that reflect the world around her since 2017. She has taken her personal and intimate stories on stage at various international music festivals including Great Escape in the UK, Primavera Sound in Spain and Splendour in the Grass. Spend a warm afternoon singing your way to space with Alex the Astronaut this November.

Carmouflage Rose

Originally hailing from Zimbabwe, Carmouflage Rose brings a unique sound to the Australian hip hop scene. He’s been in the line up of Groovin’ The Moo and Spilt Milk, and has an ARIA Gold certification to his name already. Carmouflage Rose is no stranger when it comes to creating captivating beats “that gets ya girl movin’ on the dance floor”.

NGHTMRE

Do you like heavy bass drops? If you do then you should definitely make your way to the front row during NGHTMRE’s set. From featuring on the Coachella line up a couple of years’ back to collaborating with Wiz Khalifa and The Chainsmokers, it's safe to say NGHTMRE has got more than a few tricks up his sleeves. Be sure to be there to experience NGHTMRE’s latest banger (below) at This That.

RAAVE TAPES

Fun Fact! RAAVE TAPES were actually the winner of This That competition for 2016 and opened for the festival. This year they are back with a few more singles up their sleeves. This powerful Newcastle punk rock band is bound to rock the stage again in 2019. Be careful during their set, though, because you will be dancing, screaming and jumping at the same time with their powerful vocals and grungey guitar tones.

San Mei

Do you know what’s best enjoyed live and loud? The answer is San Mei. With her heavy and fuzzy guitar riffs as well as her dreamy vocals, San Mei creates a unique musical experience like no other. I’ve actually been at all of her live gigs in Sydney this year, so you can for sure catch me at the very front during her set at This That. Come and join me if you want to experience this magical sonic journey and her amazing energy live!

Most Importantly: The Unearthed Artist

For those of you who don’t know, radio station Triple J has an Unearthed programme for discovering local Australian talents. So far Unearthed has already kick-started the career of many of your favourite musicians, including Flume, Tash Sultana and The Rubens. This year at This That, although yet to be revealed, one amazingly talented artist/band from Unearthed will be on stage opening for your favourite acts. Always support your local talents, folks!
