Debating Society (Debsoc)


Aims of the Club

- An intense, exciting, fun and dynamic University Society which meets to argue and explore a wide range of compelling issues and topics. Topics engaged with include legal/political, international relations, environmental, health, social, education and economics issues. Debating requires and encourages you to be up to date with current affairs and increase your understanding of the world!
- Regular training and development every Monday night at our Weekly Internals, which provide debaters with an arena to build their confidence, and knowledge and to develop their teamwork abilities.
- Advance the skills of debaters from every background and experience level. Develop skills in logic, structure, persuasion and argumentation, the ability to think critically and on your feet!
- Engage in a wide range of Competitions and Events to develop contacts, knowledge and experience.


2009 Activities

- Weekly “Internals” – held on Monday Nights from 6pm in M11 Chemical Sciences Building, everyone is welcome! In Session 1 we debate in “Australasian 3 on 3” Style and Session 2 we debate in “British Parliamentary” Style. For those unfamiliar, do not worry, we teach you how to debate in both styles!
- Frequent Social Events – such as our Start of Session and End of Session Parties.
- Public debates on Campus during both Semesters – come watch!
- A Wide Range of Novice and Advanced Tournaments.
- The National Australian Intervarsity Debating Championships, also known as “Easters”.
- The Australian Women's Debating Competition.
- The Australasian Intervarsity Debating Championships.
- The Worlds Intervarsity Debating Championships (will hosted by Turkey in December 2008 / January 2009).
- Hosting of the UNSW Senior and Junior Schools Days Competitions
- The Inaugural UNSW Debsoc Women’s Debating Night
