Bullets Complete Double

The UNSW Bullets competed at the State Cup for touch football in Port Macquarie during the first weekend in December. UNSW fielded a club record six teams including three men’s, two women’s and an under 20s girl’s team. It was an enormously successful tournament for UNSW with four teams making finals and two championships. UNSW finished seventh overall in the club championship standings out of 53 clubs from across the state!

The men’s division 1 team were looking to cap off what was already a massive year after their victory in Vawdon Cup. Following a close semi-final against local rivals, Easts Roosters, UNSW advanced to the grand final against the Parramatta Eels. The Eels were fielding a number of superstars including two former Australian representatives. The Bullets snuck out to an early lead but an untimely injury swung the momentum and the scores were locked at full time. In touch football, the tiebreak is decided in a drop off whereby each team drops one player at a time. With five on the field, the Bullets were able to score and defend successfully in order to clinch the rare State Cup and Vawdon Cup double.

After a narrow loss in their Vawdon Cup grand final, the second men’s team were out for vengeance. After a powerful performance during Saturday’s games, their focus shifted to finals footy. UNSW dispatched of Easts Roosters in the semi-final before putting on a very convincing performance to beat Hills Hornets in the grand final by seven tries to three. Current student Justin Hassett was awarded the Player of the Final.

Across the park, the Bullets represented UNSW proudly. The women’s division 1 team were unlucky to get knocked out in the quarter finals after taking an early lead. The second women’s team had a huge weekend which was capped off with a grand final appearance and runner’s up medal. After some late injuries, the third men’s team played the tournament with only nine men (compared to a full squad of 14). They never let their heads drop and kept running till the end. It was an inspiring effort given the heat and physical demands of the tournament.

For the first time, UNSW entered an under 20s girl’s team who wore the black and gold with pride. The girls were one win away from making finals and no doubt will be back next year to make a run at the title!
