Angela Griffin elected as 2019 SRC President

ANGELA GRIFFIN

STUDENT REPRESENTATIVE COUNCIL

Second year UNSW Social Research and Policy student, Angela Griffin, was recently elected as the 2019 President of the Student Representative Council (SRC).

She first joined the council in the second semester of 2017 as a Counselor and spent both semesters of 2018 as the Women’s Officer – bringing experience from various roles and thorough knowledge of the council as its new President.

In stating the importance of the council, Angela explains it as the main student body on campus, with a mission to represent the interests of students and fight for their rights through large scale campaigns, liaising with the university and providing support to those in need.

“We are the voice of all students, especially underprivileged groups, and our aim is to make sure that everyone feels included, are fairly treated, have equal rights and are free of harassment and bullying”.

One of the most recent matters that Angela fought for, was making sure that the interests of students were well-considered in the implementation of trimesters and the huge changes they cause for students’ lives.

“Through several rallies and negotiations with the university, we have been able to make trimesters more student-friendly, for example by a fairer enrolment process allowing students to have more time to decide on courses and completing enrolment than originally proposed by the university”.

UNSW First Responders is another initiative that Angela is very proud to have been a part of implementing.

“We created a network of trained first responders, which allows abused students to reach out to someone who knows how to respond to the situation and facilitate a quicker recovery from the assault”.

For her upcoming presidential role, her focus will be on equity and justice for all students at UNSW. In working towards this, she specifically wants to create a bullying and harassment reporting portal that covers the whole university, as well as a textbook equity scheme to make sure all students can access the complete learning material.

“More than all, I want every student to have a positive university experience, and I am very excited to take on this challenge as the new SRC President along with my fantastic team”, Angela concludes.
