Wellness with Stephanie

STEPHANIE BARIS 2019 COORDINATOR

WELLNESS

Despite only being two weeks into her new role as coordinator for Arc Wellness, Stephanie Baris (3rd year UNSW Bachelor of Commerce/Science) seem to already be in full control. She enthusiastically tells us about this volunteering program and what she envisions for the year.

Stephanie explains that Wellness was created to remind and help students to take care of themselves and each other.

“We provide online resources with advice on how to feel and do better, host events on relevant topics and our team of Wellness Warriors can be seen around campus during the term spreading joy and support to students”, Stephanie explains.

In her role as the Wellness Coordinator her focus lies on encouraging students to always strive to be better.

“It is not about putting the pressure on yourself to be perfect in everything you do, that is just not possible. It is about finding solutions instead of giving up and finding ways to do things that makes you feel and be better. For example, try meditation to calm your thoughts or start an assignment earlier to avoid the stress of cramming”.

Another goal is to reduce the stigma of mental health at campus. There was a time where she was not OK and she wants all fellow students to understand and appreciate that this is normal, but also that there are resources available that should be used.

“I think many students struggle from time to time, and I hope we can encourage students to seek advice and ask for help earlier so that they will feel better as soon as possible”.

During these early days of her role she is planning several Wellness events for the year, including big events like Stress Less Week in week 8 of the upcoming term and R U OK? Day in September.

Throughout the term, relevant topics like better sleep, mindfulness and gratitude will be addressed during pop-up events at campus; all designed to give students advice and techniques to have a better student life.

Further, Stephanie is planning to create posters with encouragements to get students to drink water or be active, and the Wellness Warriors will approach students who’s running between classes with flowers, compliments and other gestures to brighten up their day.

“I want to make sure we keep on reminding students to take care of themselves, because I know that it can be easy to forget as a busy student”.
