About the event
This is an event organised by UNSW Art & Design student Kate Stodart and Sabella D'Souza, who believe, despite the seriousness of the film’s content, this program will provode a positive, educational experience for all who attend. The intention of this program is to ignite compassion within our peers, and to instil a positive, practical means of student contribution and engagement.
About 'Chasing Asylum'
Chasing Asylum, directed by Eva Orner, is a 90 minute documentary exposing the truth of offshore detention policies. Focusing on Nauru and Manus Island, Chasing Asylum includes undercover footage never seen and intimate interviews with those deprived of their human rights by the Australian government system.
“CHASING ASYLUM exposes the real impact of Australia’s offshore detention policies and explores how 'The Lucky Country' became a country where leaders choose detention over compassion and governments deprive the desperate of their basic human rights. The film features never before seen footage from inside Australia’s offshore detention camps, revealing the personal impact of sending those in search of a safe home to languish in limbo. Chasing Asylum explores the mental, physical and fiscal consequences of Australia’s decision to lock away families in unsanitary conditions hidden from media scrutiny, destroying their lives under the pretext of saving them.” (Excerpt from Chasing Asylum website).
In 2014, riots and murder occurred in Australian detention camps on the remote islands of Nauru and Manus and the UN accused Australia of breaking more than 150 resolutions of the Refugee Convention. These atrocities sparked a nationwide debate over Australia’s treatment of refugees and inspired Eva Orner to direct Chasing Asylum. As global citizens we believe it is important to be informed of our own country’s treatment of asylum seekers. With the Australian government’s worsening refugee policies, the content of Chasing Asylum remains markedly relevant and necessary.
