Handballing in New Caledonia

The Australian Junior (U20) and Youth (U18) National Handball Teams just competed in the Oceania IHF (International Handball Federation) Trophy Cup in New Caledonia.  The Junior team won Gold and the Youth a Bronze. Competition was against other Oceania nations such as New Zealand, Tahiti, New Caledonia, Papua New Guinea, Fiji and Cook Islands.

UNSW had 4 of its players in the Junior Team. David Mekler-Peled (UNSW Handball Club President), Hamish Sinclair, Payton Vercoe and Ethan Lee Chalk. Hamish won the best Goalie of the Tournament.

This competition now qualifies the Junior boys to compete in the Inter Continental phase against the winners from Asia, Europe, Africa and Pan America. Then the winner of this gets automatic entry to the Handball World Championships. This is a massive achievement for Australian Handball’s development and very exciting for our UNSW Handball Club.

Handball is a fast actioned team game played on an indoor court which looks a little like water polo on land. It is one of the most popular sports played in Europe and even has a permanent spot in the Olympics.

UNSW Handball Club are now preparing for the Uni Games to be held on the Gold Coast very soon as well as the next round of Handball League games which are held on Friday nights locally.
