Karate

Karate chop your way to essential self-defense skills.

The UNSW Karate Club is one of the oldest and most successful university karate clubs in Australia. With over 30 years of teaching experience, Sensei Chris Wong instructs classes practicing the Budokan style of Karate. Training including basics, kata and sparring exercises encourages the development of well-being, confidence, self defense skills, physical fitness and self discipline.

What can you expect

We practice the Budokan style of Karate which engages the entire body with both kicking and punching techniques in aggressive and defensive manners. Our training involves a thorough workout combining basics, kata and sparring exercises that encourages students to develop their well-being, confidence, self defense skills, physical fitness and self-discipline.

Our club is aimed at all types of people interested in Karate. Our members are made up of roughly equal numbers of males and females, ranging from those who have absolutely no experience all the way up to seasoned Black Belt fighters.

We are a Recreational Sports Club but we provide direction and support to those members wishing to participate in external competitions.

Training Schedule

Tuesdays, 7pm-9pm, Courtside Studio (UNSW Fitness & Aquatic Centre)

Thursdays, 7pm-9pm, Judo Room (UNSW Fitness & Aquatic Centre)

Trial periods

We offer a free first trial lesson for anyone who wants to try us out. Simply rock up to one of our training sessions and one of our accredited coaches will take you through the basics and any other questions you might have about the Club or Karate.

We hold regular gradings throughout the calendar year to enable students to progress in their training (usually 2-4 gradings run throughout one year, depending on members' readiness). We also occasionally hold in-house competitions.
