Socialising

Humans are social in nature. Whether you’re an introvert or extrovert, socialising and bantering with friends is always fun! Not having enough contact with the outside world and the people around you can be taxing to the mind and may result in serious mental stress. On top of that, working all day at home can also make us stressed and overwhelmed. These are the times when socialising is most important. Socialising with our family and friends can give us the encouragement and motivation to remain strong in these challenging times.

Why is socialising important?

Socialising has been proven to increase happiness and overall mental health. It is an easy way to uplift us during these hard times. Socialising has also been proven to have benefits including:

  • Increased cognitive function

  • Enhanced mental health

  • A boost in creativity and overall motivation to daily tasks

  • Better self-esteem

  • Sense of belonging

  • Improved physical health

  • A sense of purpose & meaning

Putting science aside, it is a great way to pass the time if you are bored in isolation and to make memories with friends under unusual circumstances!

How can we socialise in a time where we are expected to socially isolate?

It is important to remind ourselves that social isolation does not mean an isolation from social connections. One of the greatest advantages of living in the 21st century is our access to the internet. Communication without physical contact has never been easier! But with access to the whole wide web at our fingertips it can seem overwhelming - where do you begin?

Here are some of our favourite easy communication platforms to get you socially involved:

  • FaceTime: Video chat your friends and family! Use this time to reach out to those friends you have caught up with in a while!

  • Instagram: Share photos of the creative things you get up to in quarantine!

  • Facebook: Not only can you add and contact friends and family, but you can join groups that share common interests!

  • Discord: Playing online games and chatting at the same time has never been easier!

  • Zoom: Need a platform to host a meeting or talk to a large group? Zoom is an easy solution for quick communication on a large scale!

  • House Party: With a quick and easy setup and a chatroom of up to 8 friends, House Party is perfect for keeping connected with friends!

Activities that can keep us socially connected:

  • Netflix Party: Who doesn’t love watching a movie with friends? Instead of binging twenty episode of your favourite series alone, why not start a watch party and do it with friends!

  • Online Games: Playing online games are a great way to connect with your friends and family! Not only are they fun, they can create a sense of competitiveness which can strengthen your connections with others.

  • Play your favourite party games through video chat: Who says you can't have fun and play party games while in social isolation? Games like Charades, Celebrity Heads and Pictionary can be easily played through video chat!

  • Study sessions with a friend: Add some company to help get you through that assignment you’ve been procrastinating on! They can motivate you and keep you focus!

  • Webcam dance parties: Learn your favourite Tik Tok dance with some mates! Who says physical interaction has to stop you from getting down.

  • Virtual Gym/yoga session: You might not be able to hit the gym but doing home workouts with friends is just as effective! Feel the burn and get those gains with company!
