Gaurav elected as PGC 2019 President

GAURAV VATS

Postgraduate Council

Gaurav Vats was recently elected as the new President of the Postgraduate Council for 2019. Having completed his Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering and Master of Science by Research back in India; he is now a current UNSW postgraduate student completing a PhD in Material Science, while showing his dedication in bringing awareness to and resolving student matters.

Since arriving in Sydney, Gaurav has taken on various roles to protect students' rights. From 2017 to 2018 he was a member of the UNSW Council and the Honorary Degrees Committee simultaneously, and then moved into the Postgraduate Council in 2017 as the Vice President. Since April this year he has also been a member of the University Research Committee.

One of his biggest accomplishments to date, is being a part of establishing a $2300 grant for postgraduate students to allow them to participate in relevant conferences. This is something he wants to increase to $3000 per student so that they can travel even further.

Now continuing his involvement with PGC, he testifies to the importance of having a council that can raise awareness of issues that are particular to postgraduate students and support them in the best way possible.

“33% of UNSW’s students are postgraduate, and as they have very different needs compared to undergraduate students, it is great that we have a designated council that represents their rights and needs".

In explaining the differences between undergraduate and postgraduate students, he highlights their life situations as well as the nature of their degrees.

"While undergraduate students tend to come straight from school and are looking to expand their social life at university, postgraduates might already have established their own families and are more career-oriented. Further, postgraduate students can be research and coursework students, which is usually very intense and with not much interactions with others".

In catering for these needs and creating a better student life for postgraduate students, Gaurav is committed to continue and enhance PCG's current initiatives, as well as adding his own points to the agenda.

Firstly, he wants to create a common platform between the faculties' postgraduate societies and the PGC. In this, he wants to make sure all postgraduate students have the full and relevant information regarding their rights and the initiatives targeted at them.

Another point that he wants to work towards, is to make all UNSW grants to be the same monetary value, meaning equal opportunities for all interests and topics.

Finally, Gaurav wants to make sure that there is higher job security for students upon finishing their degree, and believes a feedback system with UNSW alumni giving advice to current students about career opportunities and the job market, can be a great start.
