Celebrating the Victories of UNSW’s Chinese Debating Club

The Chinese Debating Club blew away their competition last month at the 7th All-Australian Chinese Debating Championship in Melbourne, placing first out of eight teams from across the country, with their convincing argument surrounding the ability of individuals’ freedom of dreams to break through society’s existing paradigms.

In front of 1500 audience members in the prestigious Melbourne City Hall, the senior team defeated the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology Debate Team to claim the winning position. This success is just one of the many accolades the club has received recently, placing 2nd at the Australian Chinese Debate Championship organised by the University of Melbourne in April.

The club’s President is Zijiang Li, a 3rd year Media student, who is driven by the opportunity to provide students with the chance to learn more about the Chinese culture and language, and to provide a casual, social environment to practise debating.

“I’m very appreciative of everyone’s contributions to the club and am hopeful for our successes to continue far into the future.”

The club’s achievements can be attributed to the dedication and hard work demonstrated by the teams, who attend weekly training sessions that mirror the structure of competitions. They also learn from former debaters who share their experiences through interactive workshops and training camps.

Joyce Yin, the club’s Arc delegate, is a 2nd year Arts student who has been an active member since her first year at UNSW. She also credits the club’s commitment to training all its members, preparing them for serious competition and is enthusiastic about the opportunity to advance into the senior team.

The team hopes to continue its streak of success in the 9th Pacific Intervarsity Chinese Debate Tournament to be held in Singapore in July. Team leaders Jingke Li and Kejia Pan aspire for the UNSW team to gain first place in their home competition, the Huaxia Cup, and encourage all interested students to visit their upcoming information stalls in the Quad this term and attend their weekly events.
