Who is this Heinz guy?

Heinz Harant was a WW2 refugee, who was in the fourth graduating engineering class of 1955. During his time at UNSW he was a kickass activist, and started many of the committees and councils on campus, focusing on everything that makes UNSW fair today.

The Heinz Harant Award is a way in which the Arc community can recognise and honour the valuable and exemplary volunteer service of an individual, who has made a significant contribution to student life at UNSW in volunteer services within Arc.

The following Heinz Harant Award recipients are recognised for their significant contribution to the UNSW community and have proven their leadership skills through involvement in student organisation activities - well done to all!

Matthew Ng

2025 Award Recipient

Matt has been deeply involved in Arc for over five years. Progressing from a first-year Yellow Shirts volunteer (2021-2022), serving two consecutive years in the Yellow Shirts Organising Team (2022-2024), to Coordinating the Yellow Shirts team and 2025 O-Week (2024-2025).

Matt’s time in Arc was almost exclusively in a volunteer capacity, volunteering an estimated 1100 hours in the Yellow Shirts program alone.

Matt’s tenure as Yellow Shirts Coordinator is a testament to both his vision and his commitment to volunteers. He introduced the first-ever Transformation Organising Team (OT) role, using digital engagement to expand the program’s reach and impact. He spearheaded an overhaul of the 12 day training program, making sessions more practical and efficient for the 200 volunteers, and strengthened onboarding for the Yellow Shirt OT’s, ensuring smoother transitions, and better-prepared leaders.

Matt’s leadership extends well beyond O-Week. Within the UNSW Law Society, he rose from Media & Photography Director to President, and within UNSW Investing for Charity, from HR Subcommittee to the HR Director position.

His consistent pattern of growth — from subcommittee to director, from Squaddie to Coordinator — highlights his resilience, initiative, and deep belief in student leadership.
