Act 1:
why is love restless?
is it a phantom limb stripped from me,
warm flesh that I reach to embrace
to instead find a void,
a glacial, permeating breeze
that clouds my airways
and leaves a lump in my throat?

Act 2:
why is love fidgety?
is it itching to ignite?
an addict hustling home to its familiar vice?
a concept
in every universe I curate
a distant gaze
in every creature I dream up?
Act 3:
why is love sleepless?
it alters my circadian rhythm.
the crickets sing a lullaby
in hopes that I’ll finally blow out the candlelight
so they can live and hunt and mate,
under the discreet blanket of the night.
we are both poor little creatures
disturbed by a hypnic jerk.
Act 4:
love is a wandering empyrean —
unheeding,
contaminating.
I crouch with a breathless zeal,
holding a fire in the belly,
veiling myself within the pasture
behind the breadth of the unassuming oak -
yearning
with an intoxicating hysteria.
