OzTag Champions 2018

UNSW took 3 teams, 2 Mixed and 1 Mens, to compete in the Oztag 2018 Intervarsity Competition down at the University of Wollongong on the 13th and 14th of July. The competition included teams from UoW, ACPE, Macquarie, UTS, WSU, University of Canberra, and Griffith University.

Day 1 saw the majority of the round games. Unfortunately due to some late injuries and withdrawals leading up to the competition, we did not have enough guys to fill both mixed teams and a full Mens team. As such, the men from the mixed teams played in both their own teams as well as the Mens team for each game. Four round games apiece, and a fifth on Day 2, saw the mens team lose to UoW and a combined Macquarie-ACPE team, with a draw to WSU. The Mens team entered the finals series placed 4th, however poised one win away from the Gold Medal match. To progress, we needed to defeat the 1st place combined Macquarie-ACPE. After a tough match, UNSW defeated UTS and were to face WSU in the Gold Medal Match. WSU put up a good fight but UNSW were able to take the lead and maintain it, winning Gold in the Mens division.

The Mixed division round games saw UNSW Mixed 1 victories in most games, losing only to UTS and UNSW Mixed 2, who went through the round games undefeated. Heading into the finals series, the Mixed 2 team held 1st place and the Mixed 1 team finished in 3rd. Due to the structure of the finals schedule for the mixed competition, 1st placed Mixed 2 went straight through to the Gold Medal match whilst Mixed 1 played against the 2nd placed UTS, with the winner advancing to meet UNSW Mixed 2 and play for the Gold, and the loser to play off for the Bronze. After a tough match, UNSW Mixed 1 defeated UTS resulting in a UNSW vs UNSW Gold Medal playoff. The match was fun but serious, but in the end UNSW 2 were victorious, with UNSW clenching both Gold and Silver in the Mixed Division.

All in all the weekend was a success with plenty of sportsmanship, talent and good cricket being displayed by all. UNSW walked away with 2/2 Gold medals and 1 Silver, the best possible outcome. We love Oztag!
