From January 2027, a new approach to allocating subsidised facility access to eligible UNSW Sport Clubs will come into effect under the UNSW Sport Club Funding Framework. The framework introduces a more transparent and evidence-based approach to how facility support is allocated, with a focus on student participation, wellbeing, belonging, inclusion and equitable access to University resources.

Under the new approach, eligible clubs may receive an annual baseline allocation of facility support. This is the level of facility access a club can request without needing to submit an additional funding application. Baseline hours do not guarantee access to a particular facility, date or time, with all bookings remaining subject to availability and the normal booking process.

How are baseline allocations determined?

From January 2027, annual facility allocations will consider factors including:

  • number of current UNSW student members
  • proportion of club members who are current UNSW students
  • student participation hours generated
  • breadth of participation opportunities provided
  • availability of beginner, recreational and social pathways
  • inclusion and accessibility initiatives
  • alignment with student wellbeing and belonging objectives.

The framework also considers existing support, financial sustainability and revenue generation capacity, and the efficient and appropriate use of facilities.

Booking within your baseline

If your facility needs are within your club’s approved baseline, you do not need to submit a funding application. Follow the current booking process to request your preferred dates and facilities.

Facility availability cannot be guaranteed. Requests remain subject to facility capacity, suitability, competing demand and the normal booking process.

Requesting additional facility support

If your club requires facility support above its approved baseline, you will need to submit an application under the UNSW Sport Club Funding Framework.

For above-baseline requests, clubs will need to provide:

  • facility or venue required
  • requested dates and times
  • frequency and duration
  • expected number of current UNSW student participants
  • estimated value
  • operational need
  • why the club’s approved baseline is insufficient.

Applications will be assessed against the relevant criteria using quantitative and qualitative evidence, with funding recommendations made through the sport governance process.
