From Situationships to Relationships: Protection at Every Stage

Modern dating does not always come with a label. Maybe you are seeing someone casually, figuring out a situationship, starting to define the relationship, or happily settled into something long term. Whatever stage you are in, protection is not just a “first time” conversation. It is part of feeling confident, prepared, and respectful every time.

In casual dating, condoms can help take the guesswork out of the moment. They are easy to carry, simple to use, and a practical way to reduce the risk of STIs and unintended pregnancy. In a situationship, they also remove pressure from assumptions. You do not need to know exactly where the relationship is going to know that your health matters.

When things become more serious, protection can become part of a bigger conversation about trust. That might include STI testing, contraception, exclusivity, boundaries, or what each person is comfortable with. Condoms still have a place in relationships, especially while you are having those conversations or waiting on test results.

A good rule: do not treat condoms as a sign that someone does not trust you. Treat them as a sign that someone is thinking ahead. Being prepared is not awkward. It is considerate, mature, and genuinely attractive.
