Last year Anna therefore decided to apply for Event Horizon – another volunteering program – designed to help run some of the biggest events on campus, including Foundation Day, Welcome Back Day, Flea Markets, Stress Less Week and more, while providing student volunteers with the opportunity to gain event management experience.
Anna started off as a general volunteer, where she did a lot of the groundwork of the events, including tasks like setting up, packing down and everything in between. This gave her a thorough understanding of how the events are run and gave her the foundation to step into her role as this year’s coordinator for the program.
She is only a few weeks into her new role but is already making big plans for the year to come:
“I want to revamp quite a few events, including Foundation Day and Quad Games, with a goal to make them bigger and better than previous years. I also hope to attract more students to the events and to make sure we see as many happy faces as possible!”
Only in her second year of her degree, she is still unsure as to what jobs she would like to apply for after university, but is confident that her time with Event Horizon will give her valuable experience to show to:
“I am already in the process of recruiting a team that I will work closely with. After this year I will also be able to show to my experience of managing big events, managing volunteers, dealing with strict deadlines and working with external stakeholders. More than anything, I think it shows that I am not afraid of taking on new challenges”.
