The scarecrow as the archetypal decoy and scare image. Decoys can be found within art as distractions from the process and aesthetics or abstractions of the concepts within. Also there is that interesting spectra of being mad and scared of something, scared of turning mad and being unsure of either. Playing sly tricks on madness.

In Through the Out Door is Naaz Hanson-Kerr's cross-disciplinary exploration of the interplay between two- and three-dimensionalities. Working in the expanded field of painting with "Expansive Immersive (Broome series)", she creates tangible forms from pigmented canvas to evoke the Broome landscape; "Damaged Goods" is a miniature painting of a crumpled image of a flower, its location requiring the viewer to traverse the length of the gallery and up stairs for viewing, with a mobile app link offering further insights; a variety of other works offer alternate investigations into the theme. Naaz invites viewer participation through indexical signs, scale,aQR code linked to social media and embodied interaction; often with a sense of humour.

History is punctuated by new models of thought and the advances that these new models bring about. Yet some ideas don't seem to change much. They persist like a bad ideological hangover from a time and place dislocated from now.
Verkenntniss is a series of falsities that claim truth,yet fail. Taking the form of false documentaries collaged from Creative Commons media and sculpture, the series looks at experiments in thought, the limitations of language on these experiments and their persistence.

Bored In The Suburbs is an investigation into the escapist fantasies of those existing in the limbo between suburban adolescence and adulthood. The exhibition sees artists who live and work from a range of outer Sydney suburbs embracing and undercutting their individual suburban experiences. What is exposed through the work of these artists is the way living in their respective regions has contributed to the style, subject matter or concerns of their specific practice.
The resulting work sees the artists indulging in time (wasting), memory, gender norms, and hedonistic behaviour as an entry-point to scrutinise both youth decadence and the perceived homogeneity of adulthood. These notions are illuminated through painting, drawing, ceramics and a range of mixed media, inviting audiences to bare witness to all that these shifting contexts yield.

1:1 Silhouettes of the Art Gallery of New South Wales' collection of modern western paintings are stacked against the wall, the public is invited to take a painting, night turns to day.
The Night Sky, Nick Garner's first exhibition of work since co-founding Das Super paper, broadly looks at processes of dissemination and disintegration. On Repetition by R.G. Dwyer, a set of artists books, will be launched alongside the series of monochromes.

Finding a position for breaking down the looping nature of reality and mind is an improbable possibility. However, manifestations of the relationship between the two can be formed through their conceptual and metaphorical expressions. It is difficult to align with a particular point of view and allow new perspectives to be revealed with the understanding that all outcomes are inherent within that given experience, form or action.
A failure to associate the connection between the internal surveillance of mind and the external surveillance of reality has resulted in expression in its most general term being reduced to its lowest denominator. Thus the processes of reality are simplified, void of internal response and are left exposing the in-between state of binary language between all planes of existence.
This conceptual framework is by no means limited and merely a point of reference by which the viewer can create their own engagements. The interconnected nature of each piece to its neighbouring piece may not initially show narrative, but with time it will - because it can.

At the heart of "Golden Ciphers / Three Red Herrings" lies a concern with how audio and vision can be ruptured from one another.
Kirkwood' work takes cues from the schizoid, polemical film making of post '68 Godard as much it does from the soupy sound of Lynch' 'Eraserhead' or the heart-palpitating arrhythmia of Tony Conrad' 'The Flicker'. Tending towards a cinematic existentialism this dual screen video installation features 'real-life' avatars that are at once comfortingly iconic to the eye in their filmic milieu and uneasily displaced to the ear in the sonic sub terrain that they inhabit.

The Greek Festival of Sydney

The popularity of portrait photography in the later 19th century has preserved an intimate window into the lives of the Greek community of Constantinople (Istanbul). Created as a means of recording family and social life, these early images attest to a dynamic, prosperous and robust urban community, which generally lived well within a multi-ethnic setting. These previously unpublished photographs are made all the more poignant by the fact that, in most cases, the identity of their subjects is unknown.

One Hung Bitch presents a panoply of deified Dickheads and Shit heads through painting and sculptural media. In this quasi-spiritual site, the tyranny of western phallocentricism (perceived as the judeo-christian, eurocentric regulation of 'culture' and 'civilisation') is rejected. While the phallus is the central motif in the works, the sphincter, as depicted in various literal and metaphorical forms is presented as a significant agent, birthing and gilding the turds of life.

Through film, voice, text and poetic materiality, Virginia Mawer investigates how the unravelling of language can affect our experience of the world.
Gaining or losing language is often destabilising because of the shifting grounds of meaning, yet its transformative nature also plays a role in creating new facets ofourselvesor regenerating dormant parts. Translated as 'memory everlasting',vičnajapamjat is a traditional funeral chorus that in this exhibition acts not only as a reminder of lost ancestors, but also distant homes and forgotten languages.
This exhibition is a body of works made during her Master of Fine Arts.

Beneath Horizons: Australian Desert Landscape critiques preconceptions that most urban-dwelling Australians cling to the rim of the metaphorical saucer, rarely venturing inside to experience the desert landscape. Consequently, our concept of the desert is configured from cultural histories, mythologies, maps, televisual and cinematic constructs. We imagine the desert, but without going there. We don't feel the red sand between our toes; experience the freedom of endless space; or see expansive flat horizons that activate our senses and transform the desert into a spiritual place.
Julia Featherstone brings six tons of red desert sand for you to walk barefoot, interact and be 'out there' in the emptiness.

Harriet's MFA research surrounds her exploration of 'distilled mark-making'. A term conceived by Harriet, distilled mark-making is a process of extracting the essence of a specific moment in time. The distilled mark is an organic and inevitable trace that is symptomatic of existing within time, such as a footprint, fingerprint, scar, scratch or smear. The distilled mark survives as a memorial to its own historic intrusion upon a landscape. As utilized by an artist, the distilled mark becomes a symbol which expresses the artist's body within a specific moment of creative action and thus is a memorialization of the very moment that the artist birthed her mark into existence.
Body Mark is Harriet Body's graduating MFA exhibition. It will explore the artist-made mark as memorialization of the artist's body within a past-present moment of active creation. The exhibition consists of two series-based work. The first, titled BodyMark, is a series of paintings that result from the repeated pressing of the artist's painted body onto paper.
The second work in the exhibition is titled Birth Mark. In creating this work Harriet hand- made paper from specially sourced plantfibers. On the 1st of February 2014 she began a process where, on the 1st of every month for nine months, she films one sheet of the hand-made paper for a period of 24 hours. In the Body Mark exhibition Harriet will show the first four months of this project as four video works alongside the four corresponding hand-made sheets of paper.

Drawing on Australia's notion of mateship to respond to the current government, this show brings together seven young artists working in a multitude of disciplines, from a range of backgrounds, and each with their own political qualms - from asylum seeker policies and environmental issues to the role of the media. We didn't vote him in, his party's actions and policies do not reflect our beliefs nor do we feel that they're beneficial to us, and we refuse to be silent - he's not our mate.

Making Way presents new work by Lachlan Herd, exploring the eradication of barriers within the environment and the self as a means of sustaining progress. As an expanding population, we undertake ongoing demolitions of environmental obstacles, paving the way toward our collective needs and aspirations. As individuals we perform cyclic purgations of the past in preparation for onward movement and the attainment of our personal desires. In both acts we remove obstructions and move forward, yet a residue of nostalgia and regret remains.
Through two major works incorporating performance, video and installation, Lachlan will experiment with celebratory acts of self destruction, investigate our relationship with the landscape as obstacle, and outline our obsession with progress.

Matrix Buffering is both a musical and filmic depiction of the spectacle we know as the Internet and its increasingly stronger presence within our everyday lives. Through the musical storytelling medium of rap and spoken-word poetry, Kel Henderson, Ryan Bell and Herbert Leota navigate from the shallow depths to the deep web, whilst painting an online-inspired bricolage of the matrix.
The simulacra we project within this data-based realm are spiritually extensions of ourselves - alter-egos. And it is through rappingalter-egosthis buffering matrix is illuminated.
We are the Internet.

Permutations is a contemporary family portrait. The gallery will visually reflect the LGBTIQA community at COFA and UNSW, where our most common similarity, is difference. Through artworks of self-expression that focus on the personal, the exhibition becomes a wider conversation about identity, society, community, gender, love, sex, strength, transformation, survival, loss and learning from a variety of perspectives. These perspectives are expressed through a variety of media, from painting and drawing, to photography, video, installation and performance.

Using materials from a sentimental site, familial nostalgia is intertwined with spam and other meaningless cultural off-cuts, with the intention of dissolving historical attachments.

With the intention of encouraging excellence in drawing the Tim Olsen Drawing Prize, now in its fourteenth year, and the accompanying exhibition have been important events. The Tim Olsen Drawing Prize has been a collaborative initiative between the Tim Olsen Gallery and the Department of Drawing and Painting, School of Art at COFA since 2001. This collaboration has been continuously supported by Tim Olsen Gallery and the new venture - Olsen Irwin. It is now open to all Postgraduate and Honours students who use and demonstrate drawing as a very significant part of their research practice across the faculty.

There are no facts, only multiple interpretations. We cannot any longer have an objective knowledge of reality. There is no reality outside of the mind. How can one find meaning in a world where the virtual is replacing the 'real'? Where surfaces are more important then depth. It is not about absence of meaning as such but about its uncontrollable proliferation.
