STYLE & SUBSTANCE

BY Lora Adzic

Contrary to popular belief, the Art & Design campus isn't only a place for creating really ridiculously good-looking artworks, but also a place for having really ridiculously unique style. Lora Adzic talks to six Art & Design students about what style means to them, who's inspiring them, and what clothes they're wearing.

Ari. 21, studying Design (majoring in Jewellery and Spatial)

What are you wearing?

Wittner shoes, American Apparel pants, tee from Saturday’s NYC, and a Balenciaga handbag. My jewellery is a combo of Huong Pham (fellow Jewellery student), Welfe Bowyer (a Melbourne-based designer) and my own pieces.

What’s something you’d never wear?

I want to say crocs but I wear them at my mums when I’m taking in the washing. I feel like I’d never wear those cargo shorts with pockets on the side.

Who is your style icon?

Iris Apfel – a source of general inspiration, and Michele Lamy – I’m definitely aligned with her style.

What are you looking forward to this year?

It’s thus far already been a very exciting year in terms of personal development of my creative practice so seeing where that goes exciting. I’m seeing Solange perform live at the Opera House and I’m really looking forward to that.

What are you listening to?

Seb Wildblood, Laurence Guy, Peggy Gou, Honey Dijon just to name a few. Also lots of tech-house so

Emily. 18, studying Design

What are you wearing?

Unif shoes, pants from Zara, top from Glassons, Quay sunglasses, and earring from EBay

What’s your opinion on fashion at Art & Design?

It’s a lot more out-there and stylish than main campus and I guess I expected that. It’s pretty inspiring, coming here and seeing how fashionable people are influences me – I want to be able to dress nice as well.

Who’s your style icon?

Yayoi Kusama

What are you doing this weekend?

Doing a lot of Uni work because I have a bunch of assignments due next week and will probably also watch some Naruto.

Loc, 22, studying Media Arts

Laura

21, studying Fine Arts/Arts

What are you wearing?

Loc: a corduroy jacket, maroon turtleneck from Uniqlo, Hounds-tooth pants from Zara, China, mustard socks, and brown boots

Laura: everything I’m wearing is from an op-shop – my clown shirt, a jacket that I think is handmade, stripey old-lady pants, low Docs, and my mum’s old bum-bag

What’s your opinion on fashion at Art & Design?

Laura: I think its good because everyone likes to experiment and have fun, which is nice. I sometimes feel like I have to dress really nice because I’m going to Uni; a lot people put effort in so I feel like I have to put effort in as well which sometimes is good but sometimes gives me a little bit of anxiety – but I feel like overall its pretty good.

Who are your style icons?

Loc: my mother is amazing

Laura: old ladies

What are you listenting to?

Loc: Cardi B

Laura: ‘Do it with a rockstar’ by Amanda Palmer

Jack, 21, studying Fine Arts/Arts (minoring in SPI and Painting)

What are you wearing?

All white Stan Smiths, Country Road socks with a sort of static pattern and a black trim on top, then I show a little band of skin so you get a little flavour of my skin tone, Navy Dickies, and a t-shirt with my slogan on it “kill the trees, eat the bees, nail the wale” – it’s short sleeve to show off my androgynous figure

What’s your opinion on fashion at Art & Design?

This campus is like a microcosm so any sort of gesture you want to make has to be dialed up by a factor of 10 because you are in a microcosm like this. I sort of think people tend to go too far. I tend to think elegance and modesty is a good guiding principal with fashion. I think irony seems to be very in, like post-2000’s look; re-doing the 80s seems to be back in again. Some people seem to bring back the 70’s but I don’t think that’s going to come back for a while.

Do you have a style icon?

My friend, Christos is very trendy and that’s helpful. But he’s not my icon – he’s by no means an icon. I quite like the 50’s I have to say. I watched White Christmas not long ago and the clothes they were wearing in that film were superb. I would love if that came back in. I would also love we went in the direction that the clothes that everyone was wearing in the film ‘Her’ though I would say the pants were slightly high.

How would you describe yourself?

Well I’m bubbly, effervescent, sparkly and heavily putrefied. I don’t know, maybe it’s up to someone else to say that.

What are you listening to?

Nina Simone is on repeat. I’m also into Hank Williams because of that Wal-Mart kid, and I really like Karl Blau’s version of ‘How I got to Memphis’.

Jake, 25, studying Design & Education

What are you wearing?

Adidas shoes and pants, both tops are op-shop finds, and Cheap Monday earrings

What’s your opinion on fashion at Art & Design?

It’s very diverse and inspiring. I normally do dress my own way but when I come here I feel empowered to really go for it and be your full self. And you don’t really feel judged or like an outsider, which is really nice.

What’s something you’d never wear?

There’s always something that I say ill never wear but then I end up wearing it. But I think right now the male rompers are something I wouldn’t wear. I mean kudos to people who can pull it off but I think I’d look silly in one.

Are you looking forward to anything this year?

I’m hoping to start my own clothing business and sell my own designs.

Do you have a style icon?

Lady Gaga

Who inspires you?
