Evelyn from iCinema

Evelyn grew up in Sydney and is a Chinese Australian. In her spare time she enjoys playing Valorant and Age of Empires 2 with her friends and watching her favorite K-dramas. She currently works as a Software Engineer developing AI-based creative visualisation projects at the UNSW iCinema Research Centre.

She has fond memories of her time as a student at UNSW

“It was challenging when I first went to uni because all my high school friends had chosen a different degree to mine. So in the first year I didn’t know anyone in my classes. It’s helpful to take classes with people you already know from high school, but ultimately you should pick your own path.”

“Sometimes it’s tempting to skip classes and listen to recordings at home. But it can make a big difference to your life to show up in class. I remember there was a time where a student in my Commerce tutorial struck up a friendship with me. Then he invited me to hang out with his friends and he also got me invited to join a few different club committees. The extracurricular experience was invaluable because it offered a fun environment where I could develop my teamwork and communication skills.”

“I eventually secured an internship at IBM. After I graduated from UNSW, I continued to work at IBM as a Business Graduate. I initially worked in internal audit and then rotated to another team where I did financial analytical work. After one year, I changed companies to a software company where I worked as a Business Analyst.”

“My exposure to technology at both companies sparked my interest in programming so I decided to do a Master of Information Technology at UNSW. Towards the end of my degree, I saw a job advertisement on the UNSW jobs website advertising my current position and it looked really cool so I applied and now here I am!”

“Computing courses at university teach you a lot of interesting theory. For example, you learn discrete math so you can prove your program is correct. You learn how to analyse and construct your own algorithms to optimise performance. When you work as a Software Engineer you will develop both your technical skills and professional skills. Your learning never stops!”

Evelyn shares her experiences working at UNSW iCinema.

“The best part about my job is the people. We are a close-knit team of university academics, modellers and developers. When we have a problem to solve, we are always able to work out a solution by pooling together our different skills and talents. It’s also exciting to be able to work with industry professionals from Australia’s art and cultural institutions.”

“I spend all day working with cutting-edge, immersive 3D and VR visualisation technology such as stereoscopy, head-tracking and voice control software. I’ve learnt how to create front-end, back-end and networking components to applications. I’ve also gotten a lot of hands-on experience working with IT setup such as setting up and configuring servers and remote working. It’s simply awesome to be able to learn something new at work every day.”
