I wasn't sure what to expect when I visited May Gibbs' Nutcote last week, but woah, what an underrated gem! As an international student and always after unique experiences, this heritage home museum in Neutral Bay was a pleasant revelation to me. May Gibbs' cozy home feels like stepping into a time capsule of creativity. The moment I walked in, I was hit with major curiosity – these Gumnut Babies books were every Aussie kid's childhood!
The house is cozy and decently spacious but packed with good depth and character. The beautiful, quaint house is quite reflective of the owner's persona. Gibbs' artwork is everywhere, and you can totally imagine her sitting at her desk, dreaming up those iconic Aussie characters. The surrounding gardens overlooking the bay waters are a vibe too – perfect for a chill moment or a gram-perfect pic.
What really got me was how relatable May seemed as the guide gave us a detailed account of her life. She was this independent, artistic woman, way ahead of her time, winning all these honors and accolades, and killing it in her field way before it was cool.
May Gibbs' Nutcote is definitely worth the tour, especially if you're an art and literature buff, or need a break from uni. And some bonus suggestions - get a sneak peek of the Hayes Street Beach or get a ferry ride to seal the scenic deal for your day trip plan to May Gibbs' Nutcote.
