Kudos Emerging Awards

Recognising and celebrating talent across all disciplines

Kudos Emerging Awards in 2021 – New Look

Kudos Emerging Awards seek to recognise and support innovation and talent across all disciplines at UNSW AD in three categories: Emerging Artist and Designer, Emerging Curator and Emerging Writer.

Due to current Covid-19 circumstances, this year's awards will be hosted entirely online. After not running in 2020 the Awards excitingly returned in 2021 in bigger, better, safer, and more dynamic on Kudos Online

The annual Kudos Emerging Awards has always featured the most noteworthy local upcoming arts practitioners, and is often the first big step in propelling emerging artists careers to the next level. For audiences, the Kudos Emerging Awards has always been the way to see and support the most exciting upcoming artists before they get big!

The Kudos Emerging Award is open to all UNSW Arts, Design, & Architecture students across any stage or kind of degree. Entering the Kudos Emerging Awards is free and all are encouraged to apply regardless of their previous experience! Kudos seeks a diverse range of applications, and is always on the look out for fresh ideas and an eager energy! The awards aim to be a stepping stone for the recipient to help build the confidence and skills in providing this exciting professional development opportunity!

All applications are assessed by the Kudos Committee, and the final online exhibition will be judged by 3 external industry guest judges who will award the major prizes.

The Kudos Emerging Award is an annual award by Arc @ UNSW Art & Design that seeks to recognise, nurture and support innovation and talent across all disciplines at our campus. Celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, the Kudos Emerging Award aims to promote excellence in visual art and design at UNSW A&D, to encourage experimentation and development of process, material and concept, and to display students' works to the broader community and to nurture critical and creative engagement and activity.

The major award has been $1,500 funded by Arc @ UNSW Art & Design, followed by highly commended awards, involving a series of exciting prizes donated by arts organisations and local businesses.

Previous Kudos Emerging Awards have included the Girl Genius Award, an independent prize guest judged by a prominent woman in the arts. This was established by Tess Allas and Miranda Samuels. Recipients have included; Claudia Nicholson, Marcia Swaby, Sab D’Souza, Naomi Segal, and Isobelle Lowe.

Each year we've invited prominent practitioners from the local dynamic arts community; in 2019 our guest judges included Danielle Karlikoff, Marikit Santiago, Naomi Riddle, with the Girl Genius guest judge Mikala Tai
