Bridge

Author bio

By Rui He

From the rhythmic dance of a second hand,

I found solace, entrusting my hopes to a bridge that spans not just rivers,

but the vast expanse of lakes and seas.

I fancied that I could subsist upon that bridge,

envisaging its arch as the tender embrace I yearned for in this transient existence.

Yet, I remained stagnant,

unable to traverse the river,

unable to touch the bridge.

My preoccupation with self-preservation hindered me,

my mind haunted by visions of being ensnared in the quagmire while crossing the tumultuous waters.

life extinguished in the blink of an eye.

perhaps I can say it is the only thing I truly love.

Not for its desolate expanses,

but for the elusive sanctuary it offered,

where the heart finds refuge in the courage to persist.

Gazing wistfully across the river,

contemplating the ebb and flow of the tides,

and tracing the celestial journey of the ever-shifting stars.

And as for 'you'

——an enigma I both comprehend and elude.

You are the bridge,

tantalizingly close yet perpetually beyond my grasp,

an embodiment of the desires that flicker within the depths of my soul.
