In 2024 the Student Engagement Grant has been restructured to have a greater emphasis on recruitment and presence on campus with the following grants to be introduced: 

Clubs are able to apply and get pre-approved for these grants, the New Student Grant/First Year Initiative, the On Campus Promotional Grant and the Student Activities Grant.

New Student Grant/First Year Initiative (suspended)

This grant is available during T1 and designed to give clubs funding opportunities to hold a social event/beginners session to help promote your club to new prospective members and attract first years/new students into your club. 

Approved usage of funding includes but not limited to: 

  • Coaching 

  • Transport 

  • Food and drink package 

  • Venue costs 

Clubs can apply for a maximum of $600 and this event/program must happen within the first 5 weeks of Term. 

There will be a small element of reporting, this includes reporting on the students that participated in the event.

Clubs will need to record:

  • Attendance List (This should at a minimum contain Name, zID, Gender)
    • It is recommended you use a google form & QR code for this
  • Receipts on items the funding will be spent on


On Campus Promotional Grant (suspended)

Designed to support our latest clubs initiative “Sport Club Takeover”, the On Campus Promotional Grant is designed to help clubs promote at the Kensington Campus at next to no cost. 

Clubs can apply for a $500 reimbursement to run a free food event at the Village Green where you can sign up new members, promote an upcoming event or just simply get the word out about your club! 

When: Every Tuesday during Term @ 12PM (excluding O-Week)
Where: Village Green BBQs (near Newton Lawn) 

Club approval will be based on: 

  • First come first serve of applications 

  • If your club has already participated 

  • If there are any other applications for the date you have requested 

There will be a small element of reporting, this includes reporting on the students that participated in the event.

Clubs will need to record:

    • It is recommended you use a google form & QR code for this
  • Receipts on items the funding will be spent on


Student Activities Grant (suspended)

The activities grant is designed to help clubs put together student events throughout the year to help offer a greater breadth of programming for their student members. 

There is a limited pool of $25k where clubs can apply up to $2,000 for a program or event that engages their student membership base. 

There is no need to reinvent the wheel, when it comes to your clubs’ event. Your pre-existing events or programs can be utilised when applying for this Grant, or even Arc Sport programs where you are requested to participate in (She Can, Day of Play etc.). However, there are some criteria to note that will improve your chances of receiving this, Grant. They are: 

  • The event or program should have more than 10 Participants*, with 80% of participants being current UNSW Students 

  • Can be either a weekly program, or a full day/weekend event. Minimum total time of participation needs to be greater than 4 hours. 

  • Showcases your sport to the UNSW Student community. 

All grants will be provided after the event/program has taken place but there will be several reporting requirements that need to be completed prior to and post event to ensure your club receives the full benefit. These include: 

  • An outline of the event, including dates, times, potential participants, and activities 
  • An outline of potential expenses, or a budget. Items to include, but not limited to are:
    • Coach expenses 
    • Facility expenses 
    • Participant subsidies 
    • Participant giveaways or prizes 
    • Equipment hire 
    • Food provision
  • Recording of all participants. This must include the following (which should also be included in your membership database):
    • Name 
    • Student ID 
    • Gender Identity 
    • Student Status** 
    • Indigenous Status 
    • Level of Study 
  • Copy of all invoices from incurred expenses from the event/program 

In the event that the above program/event is to provide your club a profit, with or without the grant, Arc Sport is happy with this outcome and it will not affect the approval of the requested grant amount. However, everything should be done to ensure that these events remain accessible to students. 

*This ensures that the experience of all the participants is enhanced. Too small numbers can ruin the experience of participants. 

**Domestic or International, only if they are a student. 


Intervarsity Grant

The Intervarsity Grant is given to Sport Clubs and teams that take part in one-off intervarsity events, such as UniSport Nationals, or for clubs without a Nationals competition, any one-off external event in which the club represents UNSW. Intervarsity Grants are given once a year to the club/team, unless your Sport Club sends teams to 2 separate Nationals events.

This grant is designed to encourage more students to join clubs and represent UNSW by lifting some of the financial burdens associated with competing. As such, it is important for clubs to let us know how you plan to use the grant in order to achieve this goal.

This grant will provide Sport Clubs and team managers an equivalent of $50 per team member, or the cost of the event (if it is self-run), whatever is the lesser amount. This amount is capped at $2,000.

Eligibility

You are eligible to apply for this grant if:

  • you are a Sport Club that participates in UniSport intervarsity events, such as Nationals, and more than 40% of the team is a member of your Sport Club
  • you are a Sport Club that participates in any one-off multi-club event (not regular competition) where you represent UNSW, more than 40% of the team is a member of your Sport Club and more than 80% of the team are UNSW students
  • you are the team manager of a UniSport team competing for a sport that doesn't have a UNSW Sport Club associated with it.

If your Sport Club does not meet the requirements, the grant will be directly given to the team manager for distribution to members, as opposed to the Sport Club.

Applying for the grant

As the main focus of the grant is the students, a minimum of 50% of the grant is to be used on student subsidies, while the rest can be spent on collective expenses as below.

All grants will be provided after the event/program has taken place, but there are a number of processes that must be completed prior (and after) to ensure that your club receives the full benefit. These include:

  • An outline of the event, including dates, times, number of potential participants*. 
  • An outline of a potential expenses list. Items to include, but not limited to are:
    • Student subsidies
    • Coach expenses
    • Facility expenses
    • Equipment hire
    • Food provision
  • Recording of all team members, include name, sex, student status, Indigenous status, Sport Club member status. This is to be provided to Arc Sport after the event. A template is provided below.
  • Copy of all invoices from incurred expenses from the event/program, provided to Arc Sport after the event.

* The number of potential participants is important as the amount of funding is based off this

In the event that the above program/event is to provide your club a profit, with or without the Grant, Arc Sport is happy with this outcome and it will not affect the approval of the requested Grant amount.

Active Women Coaching & Officiating Grants 2024 (Round 1) 

UNSW Sport and Arc Sport are proud to launch the first ever Women’s Coaching and Officiating grants, announced last December at the inaugural Active Women Awards. A fund of $10,000 is available for students and club members to apply up for to $500 to assist with gaining coaching and officiating qualifications. 

The second round of applications are now open and will close on Tuesday 31st October. Applicants must be either UNSW students or UNSW Club Members.

Grant Funding 

  • A total of $10,000 (excluding GST) is available for the second round of this grant. 

  • The maximum amount requested in one application is $500. There is no minimum. 

  • An individual applicant may receive upto two grants per calendar year. 

  • The total maximum grant funding allowed to be awarded to members from one club is $2000 per calendar year. 

  • The 2023 grants are for coaching and officiating only. 

Important Dates 

  • Applications open Friday 1st August 2023 and will close Tuesday 31st October 2023 

  • Applicants will receive notice of the outcome within 4 weeks of the closing date 

Application Eligibility 

  • All applicants must identify as female 

  • Be a current UNSW student or a current UNSW club member 

You must be a current or potential coach/instructor/official in one of the following areas: 

  • UNSW or Arc Sport program, including: 

  • Inter-Varsity 

  • Arc Sport Programs 

  • She Can 

  • UniSport Nationals 

  • Social Sport 

  • UNSW Sporting Club including affiliated junior clubs 

  • Official sporting partner of UNSW Sport 

  • A student Coaching/Instructing/Officiating at a school, community or youth organisation 

  • A student Coaching/Instructing/Officiating at Clublinks UNSW 

Application Criteria 

  • The Coaching & Officiating course/training must be an accredited course by either a National Sporting Organisation, State Sporting Organisation or equivalent sporting body. 

  • The grant is for the fee of the course/training and any registration costs or resources directly associated with the course/training 

  • Within the application the applicant must demonstrate how they intend to use the qualification within the next 12 months 

  • A supporting statement from the applicant’s club/society or equivalent body or supporting individual must be provided regarding the benefit of the coaching or officiating qualification. 

  • The grant can not be used for travel, accommodation, equipment or clothing associated with the course/training 

Funding 

  • The funding is provided by UNSW Sport and will be administered by Arc Sport 

  • The assessment panel will comprise of one member of UNSW Sport staff and one member of Arc Sport. All grants will be approved by the Head of UNSW Sport.
