Escape from Lockdown: The Bucket List

By Alexa Stevens

This is finally it! After 100+ days of this torment, we are finally getting out of this lockdown. I thought 2020 was bad, but this was hell. But this article isn’t here to dwell; instead, meet your bucket list for out of lockdown!

We’re covering all the things you may have forgotten, the simplistic and the fun (fully vaccinated and COVID safe, of course). Here’s your guide to tourism in your own town.

Have a picnic

Have a picnic

In case you’ve missed the sheer popularity of this idea already, this is the best way to obey those 10 people inside restrictions while also meeting up with friends! You can bake or buy yourself goodies (like this fancy picnic set) but picnics are the new clubs (until they open again in December)

Live Performances: Gigs, Theatre

Live Performances: Gigs, Theatre

Most of these are November or December activities, but places like the Oxford Art Factory, The Metro Theatre and our very own Roundhouse have your live music fix (how we’ve missed it). If you’re looking for a larger venue, Youngblud and The Jungle Giants at Horden Pavillion still have a few tickets available!

If you’re more theatrical, The Belvoir has a new comedy production ‘The Boomkak Panto’, in the works, and if you missed out on Hamilton, there are plenty of tickets for 19th October onwards right now! Check out the State Theatre and Carriageworks for other fun events as well.

And a special mention to Sydney Film Festival this year! It runs from the 3rd-21st of November, with a fantastic selection of films to choose from. Booking yourself a dinner with some friends or a partner and then heading to a movie is a classic activity I’m sure we all missed (even if the prices for popcorn remain outrageous).

Get charged lavish prices for brunch

It’s been so long in lockdown that I actually miss the crazy prices we Sydneysiders have to pay for breakfast at 11. However, following in the food vein, meet up with some friends and treat yourself to those $20 pancakes (I recommend Gram at Chatswood, soon to be in the Galleries!). You deserve it.

Markets are also a great place to grab food and get out and about; the Paddington markets are opening back up, and the trusty Rocks Markets will be back 30th October.

Go on a scavenger hunt!

Go on a scavenger hunt!

This can be as complicated or simple as you like, and fun either way. If you don’t mind spending some money, things like Adventure Clues ($25 per person) provides you with some structured clues to follow with a team to explore the hidden treasures of Sydney, the Botanical Gardens, or Newtown.

You don’t need to spend the cash though; drop a bunch of pins on cool shops, street art, or landmarks on google maps (Circular Quay is a great place to start) and go for a wander! Tourism in your own town at its finest.

Halloween!

Halloween!

Coming up at the end of this month, Halloween is a great opportunity to dress up and let loose. You can throw a party (albeit with only 10 people according to restrictions), go to an event (Luna Park’s Halloscream is open!) or simply hang out in a park with your best mates!

Enjoy your sweet freedom folks! I’m off to have a picnic myself :) See you out there!
